Vergil DeWayne Bane, 80, died at home on Thursday, January 28, 2021. The cause of his death was a sudden heart attack.
DeWayne was born in La Junta, Colorado; February 4, 1940. He lived there until the family moved to San Diego, CA toward the end of World War II. The family then moved to Buena Vista, CO and later to Windsor, CO where DeWayne graduated from High School in 1957. DeWayne then moved to Denver, CO to complete an Associates Degree in business/accounting. Following that he moved back to Buena Vista, CO and was hired by Climax Molybdenum Mine north of Leadville, CO. He carpooled 90 miles round-trip, five days a week for 15 years. After settling into that job he met and married Alwina Smith, whom he called, “the love of my life.” They lived in Buena Vista for 14 years and began to raise their family; family was very important to him. In 1974 DeWayne was transferred to company offices near Golden, CO and the family moved to Lakewood, CO, where he spent the rest of his life. He was an accounting supervisor/consultant for Climax/Amax and Cyprus/Amax mining companies, often traveling to various locations in the United States and Canada until his retirement. DeWayne was a member of Green Mountain United Methodist Church for 46 years where he held positions as treasurer, financial secretary, and trustee. He was also a longtime member of the HillToppers Sunday School class. DeWayne was proud to be able to donate blood as often as he could. He was also a longtime member of Kiwanis. DeWayne enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, bowling, and travel.
DeWayne is survived by his sister Janis Geist (Frank) of Witchita, KS; son Bruce Bane of Lakewood, CO; daughter Tammy Schermerhorn of Parker, CO; daughter Debbie Coyle (Leon) of Berthoud, CO; daughter Sandie Smaldone (Steve) of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren Aaron Odekirk (Paula), Laura Sinkgraven (Dan), Jaclyn Novak (Jake), Krysti Anderson (Jon), Tyler Coyle (Ruth), Zachary Coyle (Jessica), Shelby Coyle, Cassidy Martinez (Alexis), Emily Smaldone, Bailee Smaldone, and Rocco Smaldone; great-grandchildren Matthew Sinkgraven, Knox Schermerhorn, Emma Coyle, Ava Coyle, Vivian Coyle, Mateo Martinez
DeWayne was preceded in death by Alwina Bane (spouse), David Bane (brother), Pauline and Virgil Bane (parents).
Services will be held at 4:30pm, Friday, February 5 at Horan & McConaty 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO 80227. Interment will be at Green Mountain United Methodist Church at a later date.
