Verna Meyer

January 3, 1925 — May 21, 2022

On May 21, 2022, Verna passed away peacefully at the age of 97 after spending a wonderful evening with family. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a wonderfully smart and accomplished woman.

She was a strong and resilient woman who faced many challenges in her life. Her daddy passed away when she was 14. Brother William was killed in a motorcycle accident when she was 13 and brother Ralph was killed in action when she was 17.

She married Richard L Chatterton in June 1945. While pregnant with her first child, they were in a terrible car accident, killing her husband and leaving her in a coma with serious injuries. Her second marriage, from 1952-1955, gave her a daughter and a son. In 1965, she married Ken “Bink” Meyer and he adopted her 2 youngest children.

In 1943, she moved to Casper and worked as a stenographer for the Wyoming State Employment Service, transferring to Cheyenne in 1948. In 1950, she began working for the Veterans Benefits Administration as a stenographer, working her way up the ladder. After commuting between Cheyenne and Denver for six months, in 1965, she was promoted to Assistant Chief of Loan Processing. In the Loan Guaranty Division, she was one of the first women in the nation promoted to senior manager position. She retired as Loan Guaranty Officer in 1982. After retirement, she helped Bink with their appraisal business.

An avid gardener, she tested many rose cultivars for Jackson and Perkins. They built an extension on their house just for her houseplants. Some rose bushes in her yard are more than 40 years old. She was particularly proud of a Christmas Cactus that belonged to her mother and is more than 70-years-old. She loved caring for her grandchildren while they attended Lasley Elementary. She and Bink were avid bowlers and loved to play pinochle and other card games with their friends. . She loved their Hawaiian cruise, but said once in a lifetime was enough.

One of 10 children born to Edmund Cusack and Hattie M. Rogers in Greybull, Wyoming. Preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; six brothers, including her fraternal twin brother; first husband and high school sweetheart Richard L Chatterton (1945); son Richard L Chatterton Jr (1968); husband Kenneth M. Meyer (1999); great-grandson Jackson D. Merkel (2005); and the original Lucy who passed away just before turning 20 years old.

Survived by her son Darryl Meyer (Ron Quinlan); daughter Debbie (Bob) Jones; granddaughter Stacy (Steve) Merkel; grandsons Doug Meyer (Katie Seitz), Rich C.; great-grandchildren Bowen, Drew, Wyatt, and Jared; other family, Dora Meyer, Alisha Kane, Doug Odenbach; and beloved feline, Lucy Lou.

We already miss her terribly.
