Walter Lee Morris

Walter Lee Morris of Wheat Ridge, Colorado passed away on February 19, 2018 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Rose; Son; daughters, Georgia Lujan and Cherri Morris; step-children, Toni Barnett, John Patterson and Maggie Troisi; brother, Richard Glasmann; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Born a Colorado native, Walter served in the United States Navy from 1947 through 1951 and was stationed at Oakland Naval Hospital where he met and married his first wife Lula. During President Truman’s 1950 extension of all enlistments, and his final year of service, he transferred to the USS Repose Hospital ship stationed in Pusan Harbor, Korea. After his honorable discharge in 1951, he returned to Denver with his first wife and son, where they had two additional children, both girls. Most recently Walter recounted stories about his service in Korea, and leave time in Japan, to contribute to the historical memoirs for the Korean War Project: https://www.koreanwar.org/html/units/navy/uss_repose.htm After his military service he joined the Denver Police Department where he served for 20 years before retiring. In 1974 he met and married his second wife Rose who also had a son and two daughters. He and Rose lived in Erie, CO, raising their children for a majority of time with only a short stay in Lawton, OK, outside of Fort Sill, while working as a restaurant manager for Red Lobster. After leaving the Red Lobster he purchased and briefly operated a “before his time"" food truck at the Jefferson County DMV. Walter and Rose eventually settled in Wheat Ridge, where he lived out the rest of his life. During his service with the Denver Police Department Walter obtained rank of Sargent and graduated from Regis University. Over his lifetime he loved bowling, enjoyed fishing at the lake behind the house in Broomfield as well as trips to Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, and Mazatlán. His passions included meeting people, he would constantly say “You always have time to meet someone and ask them their name,” reading books about self-improvement, religion and the brain, buying endless gadgets from television ads, and making annual purchases from the many plant and seed catalogs arriving on his doorstep. He was proud of donations he made to the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corp, being an Eagle member of Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral, and having long conversations with telemarketing solicitors, who were after all just trying to make a living. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 7577 West 80th Avenue, Arvada, Colorado 80003. Interment will follow at 12:30 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery - Area ""B"", 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado.
