Wilberton “Bill” Castleberry, Jr. passed away peacefully and in the company of loved ones on March 23, 2022 in Denver, Colorado. He was 74 years old.
Born on November 4, 1947 in Albany, Georgia to Olivia Clanton-Gilyard and Wilberton “Bill” Castleberry, Sr., Bill did not take long to find his way. As a young teenager he marched in the Civil Rights movement alongside Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for justice and equality. From there his interest in politics and serving others only grew, later becoming President of the Graduating Class of 1965 at Monroe High School. Thereafter, Bill would go on to receive his bachelor’s degree from the historically black college, Tennessee State University (TSU). During his undergraduate studies at TSU, he joined the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, which jump-started his 21-year career in the United States Air Force. While in the military, he earned several awards and decorations and achieved the highest Field Officer rank of Colonel (Col).
While Bill was dedicated to the Air Force and serving his country, nothing could compare to his devotion to his wife, Katheryn M. (Hill) Castleberry, and the love they shared. Bill and Kathy’s relationship began with a whirlwind courtship and grew into 48-years of marriage that was filled with adventure, joy, pain, admiration, friendship, compassion, earnestness, faith and purpose. Together, Bill and Kathy had two children, Kimberly M. Castleberry and Wilberton “Trey” Castleberry III, who they loved dearly, happily raised, and supported in all of their endeavors.
After retiring from the Air Force, Bill eventually made his way to Coors Brewing Company, where he spent nearly 15-years in various roles within Diversity and Sales & Marketing. A company-person through and through, Bill was a consummate relationship-builder and he took great satisfaction in helping Coors’ social advancement, sustainability and overall growth.
Bill had many interests and hobbies in his life, which included: travel, food, cooking, golf, attending sporting events, and taking care of his beloved English Labrador, Chezley. He was also an avid collector of many things. But above all, there were very few things that he enjoyed more than having a conversation over a libation or meal (preferably Italian) in the company of some good folks.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Olivia (2003), father, Wilberton, Sr. (2015) and daughter, Kimberly (2018). He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, his son, Trey, daughter-in-law, Jamie, and his two granddaughters, Quinn and Zoe, his half-brothers Glenn and William and his half-sister, Susan, as well as host of other extended family members and friends.
Long known for his eternal optimism, exuberant stories and genuine kindness, Bill touched the hearts and souls of many people who all had the pleasure of knowing him. We shall remember Bill by striving to emulate his endearing qualities and by continuing to share his story.
