William ""Bill"" Deaderick Kirk, Jr., died early on the morning of October 27, 2018, at his home in Highlands Ranch, Colorado after a battle with lung cancer.
Bill was born on April 18, 1926, in Bryson City, North Carolina to Gertrude S. and William Deaderick Kirk, Sr. He had one brother, Rev. Richard Rodney Kirk, who proceeded him in death.
Bill grew up in North Carolina and attended Christ School in Ashville. He was drafted into the Army during WWII at the age of 17 and served honorably in the army infantry in the Pacific Theater. He returned to attend the University of Tennessee where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. Bill married Mary Ann Bowen, the love of his life, in the Fall of 1951. They were married for 67 years.
Bill's career as a builder of roads and bridges included service as President of the Maryland Highway Commission for three consecutive terms. He was honored by the Governor of Maryland for his work in this capacity.
Bill was also an inventor, a gifted speaker/storyteller and an avid tennis player. He shared his love of science, specifically ""how things work,"" and the art of winning at tennis with his children and grand children.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, his children William D. Kirk III, MD, Pamela Kirk Murray, RN, his grandchildren, Christopher, Dylan, Gregory, Elsa and Katie and his great grandsons, William and Samuel. Bill is also survived by cousins Joe and Steve Kirk in Tennessee.
A funeral service and inurnment will be held at The Chapel of Our Savior in Colorado Springs on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 11 a.m.. A private memorial reception, hosted by the family, will follow the funeral service. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Horan & McConaty in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
