William E Sullivan passed away in his sleep on July 6, 2024. Being born on April 21, 1928, he lived a full and rich life of 96 years. He grew up playing in Washington Park with his 4 siblings and later graduated from the nearby South High School. He loved his fury, canine friends, loved camping and hiking, and loved to swim. He played piano, loved to sing, and played bassoon in the Denver Symphony Young Artists Orchestra.
He served in the Army, being stationed in South Korea from 1946 to 1948, earning two medals for his service. Upon returning home, he earned a Bachelor of Music Education in ’51 and a Masters of Music Education in ’52. While at CU, he was assigned to accompany a vocal major named Janice Walz; they married and he accompanied her for 58 years till she passed away.
He also had a gift for math, which he studied in high school, college and during 3 summers at the San Jose Math institute. He loved music, but math became his career, teaching for the army, and then for decades in the Denver Public Schools. Many 100’s of students benefited from his kind and patient approach to teaching.
He loved to travel during the Summer months when school was out. These trips included California, Alaska, Hawaii, New York, Florida, and several countries in Europe.
He was proceeded in death by his mother, Virginia, his father, Del, his wife Janice, and his four siblings: Robert, Frank, Buzz and Virginia. He is survived by his children, Lori and Michael, his 5 grandchildren, Danielle, Shannon, Andrew, Brendan, and Morgan, and his great-grandson, Henry. The family tree includes the following nieces and nephews: Mike, Steve, Anne, Linda, Sharon, Jim, Ed, James, Jeff and Mark.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM on July 24th at Horan and McConaty, located at 11150 E Dartmouth Avenue, Aurora, CO 80014. This will be followed at 1 PM by a brief military service at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
