Willie Mae Haskell

May 27, 1925 — September 17, 2009

Willie Mae Haskell, 84, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2009 in Greenwood Village , Colorado. She was born May 27, 1925, in Ryan , Oklahoma , to John Hardy Walters and Annie Mae Corby Walters. Willie Mae is survived by her two daughters, Sue Ann Haskell, of Aurora, CO and Jeanie Marie Wayker, of Commerce Township, Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, LTC Morris B. Haskell, (RET), and siblings, Royce, Thomas, Bonnie & Dorothy Jean. Willie Mae was an Army wife to Morrie for 52 years. During Morrie's time in active service, the family was transferred to several destinations, including Hawaii and Germany. Each time, it was Willie Mae who single handedly packed and unpacked the family for each move. Willie Mae was a long time Red Cross volunteer. For many years, when the girls were young, Willie Mae found time to both work full-time and participate in her children's activities, especially scouting. Willie Mae was a big-time Oklahoma Sooners fan. She loved watching the games every fall and rooting them to victory. Willie Mae was an extraordinary mother. Under even the most trying personal circumstances, she always put her children first. This had the effect of greatly comforting them (as well as spoiling them somewhat rottenïéé½Sue, at least; Jeanie too!). Willie Mae loved her Army family. She and Morrie and their service friends planned and attended many functions together over the last 30 years. The parties continue but will now do so without Willie Mae. Willie Mae dearly loved to shop. This may be an understatement. Her daughter Sue inherited this trait and hopes to honor her mother by visiting Park Meadows Mall as soon as possible. Willie Mae was also a fine golfer. Nicknamed ""Tigress"" by a friend, she was hitting them long and straight (well, straight anyway) as recently as a couple of years ago. In 2006, Willie Mae was diagnosed with breast cancer. She bravely fought this battle as she had many other challenges and was so grateful for the kindness and expertise of her doctors and oncology nurses. We will miss you so much but are grateful you are out of the pain you endured for so long. A Memorial service will be held on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 2:00pm, in the Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 11150 E. Dartmouth Ave, Aurora, CO 80014. The service will be followed by a reception for family and friends in the Heartlight Center . A Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 11:30am, at Fort Logan National Cemetery ïéé½ Area ""B"", 3698 So. Sheridan Blvd., Denver, Colorado.
