Wm. Carl Bailey, M.D.

Dr. Bailey, 85, of Denver and Silverthorne, passed away July 31 surrounded by family. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he graduated from Wayne State Medical School before serving in France with the Army Medical Corps from 1953-55. He completed residencies in surgery at the Univ. of Michigan and pediatric surgery at Columbus Childrens' Hospital. Bill wed Joan Hullfish in 1960. After moving to Denver in 1962, he began a pediatric surgery practice at The Children's Hospital. He enjoyed teaching students, residents, and fellows in multiple disciplines. Bill founded the Burn Team at TCH, which grew into a major regional center for treatment of complex burns. He was a strong advocate of medical ethics and actively participated in medical research. Bill served as president of both the Denver and Colorado Medical Societies, and held leadership positions in the Coller and PAPS surgical societies. After retiring from clinical practice, he was appointed Asst. Dean for External Affairs at CU Medical school, promoting collaboration between the state's engineering and medical schools. Bill actively participated at Bethany Lutheran, Denver, and Lord of the Mountains Lutheran, Dillon. He spent much of his later years in Summit County, pursuing lifelong interests in the outdoors, and enjoying the companionship of family, friends, and his faithful dog Riva. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and by his children and families: Claire & Michael Roehl (Renate, Alex, Theo), Dave & Stephanie (Lucy), Matt & Linda (Braede, Jay) and Carl & Heidi (Meghan, Curtis, Spencer, & a sibling, whose birth Bill eagerly anticipated). He is also survived by his sister Marilyn (Karen, Bob) and husband B.W. Bura, and by godchildren Charlie and Kathy Hitch. He was predeceased by his parents and niece, Kathryn Reid. A Memorial Service was held August 3, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Denver, with a service to be held later at Lord of the Mountains, Dillon. Memorials may be made to scholarship funds at Adam's Camp, Childrens' Hospital Colorado Burn Camp, The Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons, or The Frederick A. Coller Society.
