XiaGe Kiatoukaysy Lor

October 1, 1935 — November 4, 2011

On October 1st, 1935, Former Laos Military Captain Toua 'XiaGe' Kiatoukaysy Lor was born, first child, to newly married XayLo Lor and Moua Vang in Ban Hong Non, Province of Houa Phanh, Laos. XiaGe is one of ten children; he has six brothers and three sisters. Currently, five brothers and one sister survive him. His younger brother, Xang Lor, died while also serving the United States and Laos in the Vietnam War at the Houi Nga Post, Lima Site #85 in the month of April of 1978. Two of his sisters were lost to illness in Laos. At the age of 21, XiaGe Lor fell in love and married as his wife Yee Vang on June 20th 1957 in his hometown. Soon after, they were blessed with four daughters, Pa, See, Yer, and Choua; and one son, Kha. All of their children are married; all together, they have twenty-two grandchildren. In 1958, the Laos government appointed XiaGe as Chief of the Valley in his hometown of Ban Hong Non. Shortly thereafter, from April 2nd, 1962 to May 14th, 1975, he served in the Laos Military as Captain of the Special Guerilla Unit (SGU)-Grounds Military (GM) 26. He was also Leader of Battalion 323-3 in Long Cheng; and a member of the Rescue Unit for US Pilots around the Laos/Vietnam Border Road #6 and the Ho Chi Minh Trail areas. After US Advisor Jerry Daniel flew General Vang Pao to Udon, Thailand in May 14th, 1975; XiaGe, his troops, other battalions, and his entire family were left behind, stranded, in the Long Cheng and Phou Bia areas. In July of 1977, Captain XiaGe Lor was determined to lead these men and family members, a total of 193 people, westward across thick jungle and the rushing waters of the Mekong River to get to Thailand. Many died from hunger, diseases, drowning, and enemy fire. The Thai government provided refugee camps in Ban Vinai for these people and others searching asylum from the Communist regime. On January 27th, 1982 XiaGe Lor and his family came to the United States of America and settled in Westminster, Colorado. He was able to find work as a machine operator at NeoData in Boulder, Colorado and worked there for fourteen years until he retired in November 4th, 2004. He remained in Westminster and most of his family still resides in Colorado. XiaGe lived seventy-six memorable years with us.
