Memories of a Good Man
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.
~ Psalm 37:23 ~
Charles Hickman was born on Tuesday, March 30, 1943, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the youngest child born to His parents Eli Hickman and Ruth Thomas. He was educated in the St. Paul school system and graduated from Central High School in 1961. He enjoyed sports and played football. Shortly after graduating he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served for 6 years. After receiving an honorable discharged he moved to Colorado and was employed by Rocky Flats.
In 1968, he met the love of his life Joan Wright. After a short courtship (he didn't waste time), they married November 22, 1969. She was the heartbeat of his life. They enjoyed life together for 50 years. They were truly ""LIFE partners.""
No family is complete without children. Charles and Joan were blessed to three sons, Jermaine, Shane and Scott. He was a dad of precept and example. He loved his sons and raised them to be men of honor and respect. He always supported them in their sports and school activities. The family had many good times and laughter, and chapters of wonderful memories. Among some of the memories, the children recall his military style morning wake ups which they said was the most annoying thing ever. They recall how he loved to shop for bargains and how he visited Walmart almost daily. The family called him the most organized hoarder on earth. He literally had 3 to 5 of everything he owned, including lawn mowers, refrigerators, etc. Aside from his Walmart fetish and hoarding fixation, he was a die-hard fisherman. He loved to fish and lived to fish. Fishing was his pastime, present time and if he could have had it his way, it would have been his ""all the time."" When you were able to reel him back in from fishing, he also enjoyed camping, playing cards and dominoes, traveling, family get togethers and spending time with friends. As most of us know, children are wonderful, but grandchildren are the ultimate wonderful. He loved, loved, loved his grandchildren and was a great spoiler. They were the joy of his life.
Charles was a man of great principles, character and integrity and expected others to do what they said they would do. He had a vibrant and abiding prayer life. He was a charter member and devoted supporter of Emmanuel Christian Center where he served in multiple capacities. He loved his Pastor and church family and was active in attending services even through his health challenges. Charles appreciated the simple things in life. He enjoyed sitting down to a good meal and rarely missed one. He lacked for nothing and he gave deep from his heart. His son summed it all up by saying; ""he was dedicated, strong considerate, a believer and overcomer, complexed, awesome, generous and a FISHERMAN!"" These are truly attributes of a ""good man.""
On June 2, 2019, Charles departed this life in exchange for life eternal with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There are many more memories of him that will be treasured in our hearts. Hold them dear and cherish the time you had with him. He leaves to celebrate his memory, his wife, Joan Hickman; three sons, Jermaine Hickman (Mishy Settlers); Shane Carlos (Gina) Hickman; Scott Gabriel Hickman. Two brotherâs, Thomas C. Hickman who predeceased him and Maurice Hickman. Two sisters-in-law, Norma and Shirley Hickman. Six grandchildren, Aniya, Asia, Corey, LaRae, Malachi, Nazir and many nieces, nephews and other family members. He will also be remembered and celebrated by his special friends and neighbors; Ted and Paula Hayes; Jimmy and Josie Smith; Dallas Jackson; Marc Wallace; Maureen and Gordan Phair; Regina and Butch Friend; and Mary Jo Gross.
