Lydia Cox

November 13, 1929 — May 5, 2019

Lydia Penrose Osborne Cox was born November 13, 1929, in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.

One of her favorite places was Strathmere, New Jersey where she spent many wonderful summer holidays with her family in her Grandmother’s cottage on the beach. She loved the ocean, seafood, and diving off the Strathmere bridge. Her siblings always thought of Lydia as their brave and adventurous older sister.

As a student at Cheltenham High School, she was a talented drum majorette, played basketball, and enjoyed art classes where she sometimes sat as a model for the class. Lydia’s father, Charles Osborne, was an avid photographer and often used Lydia as a subject to practice his skill. She met Gordon Cox at El Camino College in Los Angeles. They were married December 24, 1950, in Yuma, Arizona and had five children, Doug, Karen, Bruce, David, and Kenneth by whom she is survived.

She is also survived by her two sisters, Joan Hoerr and Eleanor Regan both of New Jersey and a brother Tommy Grisell of Texas, her 9 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Lydia loved living. She loved the mountains, swimming in the ocean, and watching wildlife wherever it appeared around her. She also loved crafts: scrapbooking, jewelry making, cake decorating, and flower arranging were among her favorites. She enjoyed sharing those talents with those around her. Even at Mountain Vista Senior Living center where she lived for the past year, she filled her time feeding the outdoor birds and squirrels with bread saved from her meals, doing art classes, playing bingo, and making crafts.

She will be missed by the staff and residents there who often saw her sitting by the aviary in the front entry interacting with the birds and being a part of the events of the day.
