Mary Belle Hawkins

Psalm 39:4 “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!”

Psalm 48:14 “For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to the end.”

Psalm 116:15 “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”

Mary Belle Hawkins was born on April 5,1935 in Beaumont Texas to Nathaniel Brooks and Eska Dee Brooks. Mary was the only child born of this union. She was surrounded by uncles and aunts who loved her. She was raised in church her whole life.  She did not like being called the name Mary Belle, just Mary.

Mary received her LPN license at Porter’s Memorial Hospital, in Englewood, Colorado.  She worked part time for Montgomery Ward’s store as a manager of the appliance department.  As kids, she would let us run around and play while she managed things.

Mary was a counselor and a developmental disabled technician for Wheat Ridge Developmental Center in Wheat Ridge Colorado . She was very fortunate to have such great friends like Miss Delsie Citizen.

Mary also worked for Developmental Pathways where she had the opportunity to work with clients with self living skills and was able to help them succeed in life.

In her last days, she worked at George Washington High School as a Paraprofessional, where she had the opportunity to work with such great staff and students. She was loved by all at the school and was known as “Miss Mary”!  When you walk into the school and you cannot find my mom, all you had to do is ask a student or staff "Have they seen Miss Mary?!"

Sometime around 1957 she met a handsome young man by the name of L.J Hawkins and they fell in love and they got married.

Mary was a proud mother of four children, her oldest child Mr. Nathaniel K Dorsey from Victorville, California, her daughter Ms. Linda Hawkins from Denver, Colorado, her son Mr. L.J Hawkins, Jr. from Las Vegas, Nevada and Elijah “her baby” James Hawkins (spouse of Beverly) from Aurora, Colorado.

She has five grandchildren Elijah Jr, Anthony, Alex, Nay and Sullas, who preceded her death. and seven great grandchildren.

She was a woman of faith and believed in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of Zion Baptist church all the days of her life.

Mary was a woman who had a heart of gold and loved everyone unconditionally.  As kids, we were able to bring home some friends who had nothing to eat because we knew that our mom would feed them and take care of them. If you needed anything you could always depend on Mary to be there for you.

Every Christmas holiday, Mary gave every neighbor and every friend and family poinsettia and influenced me and my brother L.J to drive around town to give them to each individual.

She would take her nephews and nieces on field trips to the mountains  and our favorite one was with our cousin John Willie. She also took us to the drive in movie theater when we were kids.

We would go on cross country road trips to Calvert , Texas with our uncle Gye and aunt Pauline and my mom would bring an entire lunch to feed you for the next two days along with the wet towel to make sure you clean your hands and face.

Mary Bell Hawkins departed this life to embrace our Lord and Savior on July 4, 2021 in Aurora, Colorado. Those who cherish her memory and mourn her loss includes her daughter Linda Hawkins and her three sons, Nathaniel K. Dorsey, L.J Hawkins Jrr and Elijah J Hawkins and all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and a hosts of nieces and nephews and many friends.
