Mary Lou Nazarenus

December 11, 1933 — October 19, 2022

Mary Lou Weigle Nazarenus, age 88 died at Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge, Colorado on October 19th, 2022.

Mary Lou was born December 11, 1933 in Greeley, Colorado to Inez Frances and Arthur Gustav Weigle.  She lived in Platteville with her mom, dad, and two sisters before moving to Greeley.

Mary Lou is a sixth generation Coloradoan, with her mom’s side of the family, the Howlett’s and O’Hayers, who arrived in Colorado the year 1865 while still a territory.  Her children are seventh generation while her grandchildren are eighth and great grandchildren are ninth generation Coloradoans.  This is something of which she was immensely proud.

Mary Lou met Bob Nazarenus on "Dizzy Street" in Greeley and she knew he was the one! Their marriage lasted 62 years until Bob’s passing in December 2014. Mom always sang to dad, “If we make it through December, everything’s gonna be alright, I know” (Merle Haggard song). They were married September 5, 1952. Mary Lou and Bob were blessed with four children, Rob, Cindi Lou, Chuck, and GiGi.

In 1959 they moved to North Denver to belong to Holy Family Parish because of strong family ties.  The O’Hayers helped to build the church, digging the foundation. Mary Lou and Bob belonged to Holy Family for over 60 years with their children attending school there as well as one grandchild.

Mary Lou held several supervisory and managerial positions throughout her career. She was a people person.  She was only eighteen when supervising for the first time at Mountain Bell.  She was business manager for Montgomery Wards for many years, working up to the age of eighty-four at Sam's Club.    You could not take her shopping there after retirement without spending at least 2 hours, everyone would run up to her saying “Hi grandma” or running up saying “Mary Lou, Mary Lou”, with many, many hugs!

Mary Lou is proceeded in death by her parents, stepmother, her youngest daughter, GiGi, and husband, Bob. She leaves behind Rob (Kathy), Cindi Lou (Lee), and Chuck.  Her grandchildren Missy, Garrett, Lora, (Joe), Zack (Hailey), Sofie, Lynzie, (Jason), greatgrandchildren Emmy Lou, Tucker, Quentin, and Maverick, three sisters, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou and Bob's motto "We Loved, We Lived, and We Danced".  Mary Lou, her warm heart, generosity, smile, jokes, and loving ways will be missed. She was incredibly fun loving.

Her greatest joys were family gatherings and having her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren near her. She was so proud of each of them. She was always eager to share the accomplishments of her grandchildren and she beamed with pride each time she did.

She bestowed upon her children love, hard work, a giving and sharing trait, moral values, and a strong belief that family is everything.

The fact that Mary Lou left behind a place that cannot be filled is a high tribute to her. Life can be the same after a trinket has been lost, but never after the loss of a treasure.

The lives worth celebrating, and the ones who lived them, aren’t just for history books. We all have a desire to be remembered, to leave a legacy of some kind, and to make some sort of impact on this world. Mary Lou left us with a legacy of love. Anyone who knew her, loved her. And she loved them back deeply.  We now have the opportunity and the duty to continue to share her legacy of love.
