Patricia Louise Geers
On June 3, 2021, our wonderful sister, aunt, and friend, Patty Geers, passed away at Lutheran Medical Center, following complications from surgery. She was 67.
Patty was born in St. Louis, MO, on Oct. 30, 1953. She was the first-born child of Joseph Geers and Shirley Emge Geers. Over the years, five more daughters arrived, and the nickname “Geers Girls” was born.
In 1965, the family moved to Palos Verde, California. After 2 1/2 years they moved to East Brunswick, New Jersey, and then in 1970, the family finally settled in Littleton, Colorado.
When Patty was born, her eyes were crossed, and she required surgery. But even with this obstacle, Patty walked before her first birthday. Her verbal skills were exceptional, and one sister fondly remembers how Patty would shout out in church “here comes Jesus!” every time she saw the priest arrive at the alter.
Patty attended a typical kindergarten class, but during first grade, her developmental disabilities were diagnosed. Over the years, there were times of struggle, for Patty and her family. Being the oldest, it was difficult for Patty to watch siblings hit the milestones of graduations, jobs and marriage. She lived in a variety of residences, but eventually settled in the DDRC (Developmental Disabilities Resource Center) system which gave her new friends and a different kind of family.
As everybody knows, Patty couldn’t keep a penny, because she had to spend her weekly allowance. She loved shopping, but buying things was her real passion. And then there were her favorite TV shows, especially the Wednesday night line up of Chicago Police, Fire, and Medical. Celebrity news was important, and she eagerly shared who was gracing the cover of People magazine each week. But her absolute favorite activity, was spending time with her family, be it lunch with her sisters, or lively celebrations for Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays.
It is a sad time to lose the first Geers Girl, and she will be missed.
Patty was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Shirley Geers; and her nephew Brian Geers Osborne. She is survived by her sisters and their husbands: Anne Hnida (Dave); Beth Loftis (Bob); Karen Osborne (Mike); Susie Stevens (Mike); and Jenny Behnke (Robert). Her nieces and nephews and their spouses: Shay Stevens Brandl (Steve); Katie Hnida; Joe Hnida; Rachael Stevens; Kristen Hnida Walker (Dave); Jeffrey Stevens; Jim Hnida; Shannon Osborne Canono (Michael); Matthew Loftis; Ellen Loftis; Megan Osborne (Mario Rodriguez); Bryson Behnke; and Caroline Behnke. Great nieces and nephews: Avery Wilcox Brandl; Riley Brandl; and Everett Walker.
