How to Choose a Provider

Choosing a Funeral & Cremation Provider

Did you know that Colorado is the least regulated state in the United States and anyone can hold themselves out to do this work? Unfortunately, this means that many local funeral providers offer substandard services. That’s why it’s so important to do your homework and choose a professional, compassionate and highly experienced funeral provider—a funeral home you can actually trust.

Before you settle on a funeral provider, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is the funeral home family-owned and operated or is it owned by a huge national chain?

In this region, which is dominated by huge chains and multinational conglomerates, Horan & McConaty proudly remains independent and family-owned and operated.

  2. Where does the owner live? Does he or she live here in Colorado or in another state?

Horan & McConaty’s owner and CEO John Horan is a lifelong Denver resident.

  3. How long have they been in business?

The Horan and McConaty families have been serving Colorado residents since 1890. Over the decades, we have provided compassionate care and unparalleled service to more than 100,000 families.

  4. Does the provider follow certain standards even though the state of Colorado does not require it?

Because we are committed to excellence, Horan & McConaty voluntarily adheres to the highest funeral industry standards.

  5. Always ask “Do they have an onsite crematory?”

At Horan & McConaty, we offer cremations at our own crematory, which means your loved one will never leave the shelter of our expert care. You can take comfort knowing our trained professionals will handle every step of the cremation process with dignity and respect.

  6. Do they offer full-time grief support to survivors?

Horan & McConaty is the only firm in the Denver area to offer full-time grief support to the families we serve.

  7. Do they have comfortable, conveniently located facilities?

Horan & McConaty offers 7 convenient locations throughout the Denver Metro area. Our beautiful facilities were designed to provide a sense of warmth, peace, serenity and comfort. We also offer elegant full-service reception centers that can accommodate virtually any type of event before or after the service.

  8. Is the funeral staff friendly, professional, compassionate and experienced?

At Horan & McConaty, we have carefully chosen each member of our staff to ensure that our families receive professional, compassionate care. Our highly trained, caring experts are here to guide you through every step of the arrangement process and support you during this painful and difficult time.

We can guarantee that if you ask other funeral and cremation providers these questions, you will not receive the same answers. Again, Colorado is the least regulated state, which allows anyone with little or no qualifications to offer cremation from garages, industrial warehouses, contract crematories and other substandard facilities. With these substandard providers, mix-ups and other mistakes have occurred. Call 303.745.4418 today to ensure you receive the highest level of care and all of your questions are answered.

Customer Review

Andy H.

Littleton, CO

My wife Rosa passed away on 2/2/14 after a six year battle with cancer.  I only knew of one Funeral Home close to my house and since I had heard commercials before, I thought Horan & McConaty would work fine.  I had no idea what a positive, life-changing experience it would be for myself and family.  Within an hour of my wife's passing, a kind representative from H & M arrived at Denver Hospice to explain the process.  Within about 24 hours, I received a call from Jim Moon at the Centennial Location to not only offer his condolences but also to set up a time to meet and to arrange a time for the viewing.

My wife went through a very difficult time.  I remember the strain on her face as she fought for her last breaths of life and I remember how she looked when the nurse woke me up to let me know my beautiful wife had passed on into eternity.

To say the viewing was life-changing is an understatement.  It is hard to find the words to express how much comfort and peace that brought.  She never looked so beautiful and in fact looked 10-15 years younger than when I last saw her at Denver Hospice.  It was truly incredible and it's an image I will hold dear to my heart forever.

Jim was absolutely amazing during the whole process.  He called me every day to see how I was doing.  He offered guidance and his expertise wherever and whenever needed.  Pressure never once entered the equation.  I worked closely with Christine on the flyer and pictures and she was simply fantastic.

The service was on 2/15 and although Jim was not able to attend, Lucas was and he did fantastic.  I had a couple of tricky recordings that needed to be queued up during the audio portion and he nailed it!

The service was flawless.  The music and pictures played beautifully.  The stage looked so elegant and beautiful.

It's an excruciating thing to lose your partner and best friend - even more when there is suffering involved.  Having a partner like H & M there to ease this process and transition is an extraordinary gift.

I feel very fortunate and blessed to have partnered with H & M to begin my process of healing.  This was a very positive experience for me and my family.  I am a customer for life and I cannot imagine considering anyone else for funeral and cremation services.  It's not a sexy business and certainly not something we like to talk about too much but it is a part of life that we all have to face sooner or later.  I feel I have gained a friend and an invaluable resource through all of this.

I've read some of the reviews and although I can't speak to some of the negative experiences, I can only speak to mine and I absolutely recommend H&M because I believe this is a business that truly cares about helping loved ones through this difficult time and I received nothing but compassion, understanding and integrity through the entire process.  It may not have been the cheapest in town but for what I received and the healing it brought me, it was worth every penny.
